National 2000 Champions
Check out the NEW Chargers Premiership Photo on the Front Page, I should be able to get a larger one soon. I will link it behind the existing pic.
A draft draw is out and I have published it. Its possibly not the final version, but it gives everyone an idea of where we are at.
It seems all isn't well it Tassie ABA circles. The Launceston Tigers have announced they have decided to close, with little or no sponsorship in the State that they could find. Strangely enough the Devonport side have found a new lease of basketball life and have announced a new sponsor in the Patrick Company they are a HUGE shipping firm and together with this announcement they are now know as the Patrick Thunder.... good name!!!
Beattie is off shortly and drinks are planned shortly. It possibly the end of the last 6 years of the Chargers era with everyone doing their thing and moving on. Personally I have never met a better group of people. It been fun, a little anguish, but overall the last 6 seasons have been nothing but great times. All the best to everyone in the future and maybe one day (not too soon) most may play again as the 2000/2002 ABA Championship team.
A new era is in the offing, so please get behind your NEW team in the 2003 season. The fans and the visitors to the games and this site, is what its all about You out there make it worthwhile for those involved. Please don't forget what has happened and how in Hobart we have developed a winning culture and ethos. This will always be our aim, and even if on court, the results may not reflect the recent successes, you will know that the philosophy is indeed there. Give it your best shot, and try as hard as you possibly can. That's all we ask.
Congratulations to Ben Harvey too on the announcement of his engagement to Kristy. All the best and lets hope we catch up shortly for Engagement drinks.
Big Ray has been in touch and says he's doing 6A.M. SPRINTS!!!! That's quite a feat on 2 counts. 1. is that he's up @ 6am on the track, and 2, that he is indeed on the track and doing sprints!!!! Good luck to him. Lets hope it works out for the BIG fella and he comes back to us soon. (2 years time at least). Robbie is to have is shoulder looked at in the off season, next Monday.
It certainly will be interesting to see what the lineup will be and what sort of roster is drawn up. Its early days, so look for updates as they come to hand.
That's right WE WON!!!!
Playing the AIS a team of the best young talent from all over Australia, our task was a hard one indeed. Not only are they young but they are also TALL, and I mean tall.
The fight to get there was indeed a hard task too, and after flogging Cairns on Friday, I think we assumed that everyone else was going to be easy too. WRONG.....
Saturday we played Sturt. a very strong team with 3-4 NBL Adelaide 36'ers in their squad. An arm wrestle ensued and at no stage was anyone ever much more up than 2-3 points until the 3rd Q. They were strong and disciplined and well coached, and lead by as many as 12 points, and with 90seconds on the clock to go we were all but DEAD.
Wrong, some how we managed through guts and hard defence to get 6 stops in a row, and convert them all and miraculously, we snatched the victory by 5 points. Oh did I mention Biwers 30 points and 30 rebounds!!!!!!!
Sunday was the G/F.
The same again yet we managed to get 16 points behind, yet some how we knew that our experience would win out in the end, and indeed that's exactly what happened. They crumbled in the end, and we won our 2nd title and back- back Premierships.
Congratulations to South Conference Coach of the YEAR - Mark Chivers
Congratulations as well to David Biwer, who has been selected in the South Conference ALL ST*R 5. PLUS the All St*R Final five from the Grand Final series together with Paul Crombie who also made that side.
The list goes on, Andrew Beattie won the Grand Final MVP player. Well done Andrew... ( I have a wheel barrow, its front wheel went round......)
Additionally I must thank all the supporters who travelled from Tassie and other places, to attend and support YOUR team. The support was awesome and did indeed make a difference down the stretch believe me. Thanks again, its great to see so many committed fans at almost every away game, their is someone there.....
Also there was Pat Whalen. Former Assistant Coach to Dr David Adkins in the Carfino era. Pat is an occasional visitor to the Chargers away games and has written a great article which I have posted here. He says it far more eminently than I could ever do.

The history of the Chargers is brief. Since the demise of the DEVILS the intention has always to be the best at the next level in all areas. Professional as we can be, with a limited budget, and minimal resources. People at times seem to forget that other than some players everyone is volunteering their time freely. The COACH, Asst Coach all give their time for no recompense. We all love the game and try to support YOUR TEAM.... Sue Leedham, another tireless volunteer, have all contributed to OUR on court success. Please get out and support YOUR team. We are still the BEST team in the ABA, so get out and support YOUR TEAM!!!!!
4 South Conference Titles and 2 National Titles as well in 6 years says it all. get behind YOUR team.
